Veterans' Base Camp, Chaplin, CT
From our speaker: My name is Cindy Archibald; I am a licensed clinical social worker and the Executive Director of the Veterans Base Camp. In October of 2018, after finishing my Master's degree, I was given the opportunity and challenge to create a program at a 43 acre property purchased by two business partners. The property, then empty, was formerly a summer camp for young people with autism. I was told that I could use the property, but there was no money, no budget and no salary. There were 7 cabins, a main building with a dormitory area, dining room, laundry room, and a professional kitchen. Within a year, with support from the community, volunteers and a lot of prayers, Veterans Base Camp opened the RESET transitional program and the Vittles 4 Veterans Food Pantry, and began working with two different community-based educational programs, giving them the opportunity to practice social skills, learn pre-vocational and vocational skills while at the Camp.
Despite Covid hitting the world in 2020, our program continued to grow: delivering food to homebound veterans, running the food pantry and providing support and housing to veterans going through life transitions due to homelessness, joblessness, trauma, addiction, divorce etc.who were homeless.
Today, we continue to grow our program- having added a working greenhouse, equine-assisted therapy, clinical, peer and pastoral counseling, and more. Veterans Base Camp is a work of heart-as we continue to be 100% run by volunteers. I am happy to answer any questions you might have about our program.
